Unfortunately, the original photographers and subjects depicted in the photos in the exhibition are unknown. Traces found on the glass slide photographs featuring film actors and actresses indicate that these date from the 1920s and are of American origin. These glass photographs in this exhibition were photographed and edited by Peter Delwel. He has made every effort to identify the original rights holders of the images used. Anyone who believes they have a claim to rights is requested to contact him via the contact page on this website. This concerns material for which the copyright could not be traced, in accordance with the rules for 'orphan works'.

Photos with a large number of subjects have been checked for their presence on the internet (Google Reverse Image/Google Lens). The photos could not be found there; however, some of the subjects were identified*. The subjects identified in these photos were not selected for the exhibition. Several expert staff members in the field of silent films from the 1920s at both Dutch and German film museums were also approached with the request to identify the subjects depicted. This, too, did not yield any results. In the US, all works legally published before 1931 are permanently free of copyright. This includes well-known films, promotional photos, and early Hollywood footage. Since 2019, this boundary has shifted forward by one year on January 1st each year. Therefore, works from 1931 will also have become free in 2026. Source: The University of British Columbia & Wikipedia.

Portrait rights are more complex, as each US state applies different legislation. License-holding companies approached proved unwilling to cooperate with my research into any potentially remaining copyright or portrait rights.

* Internet photos with identified subjects
A small number of photos on the internet showed clues pointing to American films from the 1920s. For instance, a reference was found to an actress from the silent film era: 'Alla Nazimova'. In 1923, she starred in the film 'Salomé'. Furthermore, a reference was found to the American actress Lila Lee, who starred in the film 'Honky Tonk' from 1929. It was explicitly stated that copyrights on photos of Lila Lee expired in the United States on January 1, 2025. Another indication that the photos date from the 1920s was found on a photo of a poster for the film 'Souls for Sables'. This film was released on January 9, 1925. None of the individuals from the photos selected for the exhibition can be found on the internet. Moreover, the use of glass as a carrier for photo emulsions virtually ceased after 1930.

The exhibition has no commercial purpose other than to cover its costs. A charity is being sought to donate any potential proceeds. In all likelihood, this will go to Doctors Without Borders.
